CENTENNIAL PANEL and THE OPEN-LEARNING INITIATIVE

I convened a Harvard Extension School Centennial panel discussion, titled “No More Teachers? No More Books? Higher Education in the Networked Age.” Held on November 18, 2009 it explored issues that arise in offering higher education in the digital era. The panelists (from left to right): Prof. Harry Lewis (moderator), Dr. David Weinberger, Prof. Robert Darnton, Mr. Craig Silverstein, and Prof. Sherry Turkle On September 25, 2009 at the Harvard Extension School’s Centennial Convocation, we announced the launch of an “Open-Learning Initiative” that made a modest sample of Harvard courses available to the public. These so-called “centennial courses” provided open access to online courses in celebration of the Extension School’s mission and was a compelling demonstration of how Harvard can contribute to the global public good. Long before edX, this site attracted more than a half-million unique visitors.
