Funding

HTA admission decisions are made solely based on academic criteria, without consideration of financial need. However, if you require financial assistance, we encourage you to explore the following funding options:

Harvard Students

Mignone Center for Career Success (MCS)

The Mignone Center for Career Success (MCS) offers funding for a limited number of admitted and eligible Harvard College students. If you are a Harvard College student, you will be asked on your Harvard Summer School study abroad application if you would like to be considered for funding. Funding selection is by lottery, and award amounts vary by program and financial aid status. MCS funding awards are tied to a specific program, and cannot be transferred to another program. If you opt in to be considered for funding, you agree to allow MCS to obtain your financial aid status from the Harvard College Griffin Financial Aid Office.

Fairbank Center

Fairbank Center offers Summer Language Grants for undergraduates and graduates who plan to enroll in a summer language program for intermediate or advanced language study of languages necessary for research in China Studies. This grant is separate from the HTA application, and materials must be submitted directly to the Fairbank Center by their deadlines.

Asia Center

Asia Center offers funding opportunities to undergraduates and graduates who plan to enroll in a summer language program in Asia. This grant is separate from the HTA application, and materials must be submitted directly to the Asia Center by their deadlines.

Weatherhead Center for International Affairs

The center provides grant support for students whose research focuses on international, transnational, global, and comparative national issues and may address contemporary or historical topics. This grant is separate from the HTA application, and materials must be submitted directly to the Weatherhead Center by their deadlines.

Other Harvard offices, departments, and centers may also offer funding to Harvard College students for Harvard Summer School Study Aboard Programs. Search CARAT for potential funding sources.

Non-Harvard Students

If you are enrolled at other institutions, you should consult their financial aid offices for available funding options. Your school may also offer specific grants for language study (such as the FLAS, or Foreign Language and Area Studies) or programs focused on Asia. For instance, students at Yale should explore the Richard U. Light Fellowship Program.
