Undergraduate

The Foreign Language Citation in Armenian requires 6 semesters in Armenian.

The Secondary Concentration in Armenian Studies requires 5 courses, of which 2 can be language courses.

The Concentration in Armenian Studies requires 9 courses of which 4 must be language (elementary and intermediate) and 3 must be tutorial courses. Students who choose a Concentration in Armenian Studies may write an optional senior thesis or conduct a thesis project for honors.

The concurrent AB/AM in Armenian Studies requires 4 graduate level courses in Armenian Studies (which may include language courses).

Graduate

The program in Armenian Studies focuses on the rich culture and history of Armenians from antiquity to the present time. Students will develop their course of study in consultation with the Armenian Studies advisor, Prof. Christina Maranci. Ability to work with Armenian sources (including classical and/or modern Armenian) is a prerequisite for admission to the program, and an interest in material culture is desirable. Students will be expected in coursework to gain knowledge not only of Armenia and Armenians but of adjacent worlds in the Near East. Students pursuing a graduate degree in Armenian Studies are required to meet the general graduate requirements for all students pursuing graduate degrees in the Department of Near Eastern Language and Civilizations, including the knowledge of one departmental language in addition to Armenian (such as Arabic, Persian, or Turkish, and potentially Greek, Syriac, or Georgian) and reading knowledge of two modern languages, one of which must be French or German.

Those wishing to focus on Armenian art at the doctoral level are encouraged to apply to the Department of the History of Art and Architecture.
