João Paulo Barreto is Indigenous to the Yepamahsã (Tukano) people, born in the São Domingos village, in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM). He graduated in Philosophy and has a masters and doctorate degree in Social Anthropology from the Federal University of Amazonas. He founded the Bahserikowi Indigenous Medicine Center and the first Indigenous Food House – Biatuwi. He is also a researcher at the Indigenous Amazon Studies Center (NEAI) and a collaborating researcher at FIOCRUZ/Manaus. Paulo Barreto is a member of the Science Panel for the Amazon, of the Brazilian Academy of Science, the SoU_Ciência Scientific Committee and the Organization of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACTO). He is also the coordinator of the United Network Peoples Forum. He was awarded the best PhD thesis in Anthropology and Archaeology by CAPES in 2022.
