Historian and Geographer, Postdoctoral Researcher, Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology

Freg J. Stokes is an Australian historian and geographer. Freg’s work uses a combination of mapping, infographics, archival research and dialogue with Indigenous thinkers to visualize two longue durĂ©e historical processes: how Indigenous labour in the Atlantic and Amazon Rainforests of South America assisted European commodity production; and how hidden patterns of long-term Indigenous resistance impeded deforestation in these regions. Freg is currently working at the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology in Jena, where he is extending this research model to research capitalist expansion, deforestation and political resistance across the tropics over the last five centuries.
