Claudia Mattos Avolese was a professor for the History of Art at the University of Campinas in Brazil from 2003 to 2021, when she accepted a position as Senior Lecturer at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, immigrating to the US. She is a specialist in 19th century art and has worked, among others, with art related to scientific expeditions to Brazil. Most recently, she has turned to the study of Contemporary indigenous art in Brazil. In Fall 2023 she partnered with Naine Terena to produce a second iteration of the exhibition “Vexoa: We Know” at Tufts University. Mattos Avolese is also part of a research initiative that investigates new approaches to Indigenous histories with focus on the Marajó Island in the Amazon. Mattos Avolese has developed a dynamic method named “Talking with Objects” to approach sensitive discussion around non- traditional art historical objects.
