Show me your face and make me forget my existence
Tell the wind to take the harvest of the burned
Since we gave up our heart and eyes to the storm of affliction
Say, “Come flood of sorrow, tear this house from its foundations.”
Who can smell her curls, like fresh ambergris?
Alas! O raw heart, forget this talk
You could say that my breast overwhelms the fire-temple of Fars
You could say that my eyes disgrace the Tigris of Baghdad
Long live the old Magus, let the wind take the rest
To anyone else say, “Go forget my name”
Make no effort on this road and you will not arrive
If you seek the reward, do the will of your teacher
Promise to let me see you for one moment on the day of my death
And then take me, happy and free, to my grave
Last night she said, “I will kill you with my long eyelashes.”
O lord, banish the thought of cruelty from her mind
Hafez, think of the beloved’s tenderness,
Leave her threshold and take this cry and complaint with you
Original:

and cry to high heaven
because I have
open flame
within my breast
