Responding appropriately in the face of fear is an important part of life. In fact, dysfunction in this ability is a major component of several psychiatric disorders, including anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. But how do our brains know when we should be afraid and exactly how afraid to be? In this lecture, we will discuss the history of fear learning, our current understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of fear, and how new techniques are propelling future research into our understanding of fear.
