Jian Cui (CV) is a first-year graduate student at Harvard University, specializing in theoretical phonology and first language acquisition. On the theoretical side, she takes on the task of exploring linguistic universals that underlie cross-linguistic phonological systems, with particular interests in Bantu vowel harmony and African tonal systems (both lexical and grammatical). One piece of her research on vowel harmony will be presented at the 30th Manchester Phonology Meeting (2023). In her work on acquisition, Jian focuses on language development in phonology and morphology, particularly in tonal acquisition and infant word recognition.
