After the conclusion of the OpenDP Community Meeting, there is a workshop and hackathon open for anyone to join. More information about each can be found below!

DP Beyond Algorithms (part 2): Building a Community around Sociotechnical Aspects of DP Deployment

Date and time: Friday, August 23rd from 1pm – 4pm ET

Led by: Rachel Cummings (Columbia University), Gabriel Kaptchukis (University of Maryland, College Park), Elissa Redmiles (Georgetown University), Priyanka Nanayakkara (Northwestern University), Jayshree Sarathy (Columbia University)

Descriptor: This workshop will bring together participants who are thinking about and working on aspects of DP deployments beyond algorithms and technical tools. The goals of this workshop are to (1) foster community around these research efforts, (2) develop community principles around doing interdisciplinary DP research, and (2) generate future research directions around sociotechnical aspects of deploying DP. The workshop will consist of short talks and breakout sessions, and will provide resources for future community engagement and collaboration. We welcome participants with any interest in sociotechnical aspects of DP, regardless of prior experience working on these topics.

A parallel breakout session will be held Friday, August 23rd as part of the OpenDP Community Meeting agenda to start the conversation entitled “DP Beyond Algorithms (part 1): What does it take to successfully deploy DP from a sociotechnical perspective?”. More information about that session can be found here.

OpenDP Hackathon

Date and time: Friday, August 23rd from 1pm – 5pm ET

Led by: Michael Shoemate (Harvard University/OpenDP), Yanis Vandecasteele (Harvard University)

Descriptor: Welcome to the 2024 edition of the OpenDP Hackathon series! Form teams and hack on mini-projects in one of two tracks:

  • Applications: conduct a DP release with the OpenDP Library
  • Algorithms: prototype a DP algorithm or demonstrate a DP concept

If you’re not sure what to work on, take a look at our starter datasets and algorithm ideas (we’ve prepared some clean datasets in social science, medicine and e-commerce). Collaborate with like-minded people to learn how to apply differential privacy and familiarize yourself with the OpenDP Library. See how DP works in practice and develop skills to safely unlock crucial sensitive data.

Three winning projects deemed most original and three deemed most useful will be announced on the OpenDP blog, along with a description of your projects!

NB: Participants from all backgrounds are welcomed, our team will be here to help you make your ideas a reality.
