[A lone Red Army tank attacks a German convey in World War II.]

Leonov, Leonid. Invasion.
LOCATION: Widener: Slav 4180.340
[A play which is usually considered to be one of the best of the wartime period. It tells the tale of a prodigal son, a former convict, who return to his family just at the moment when his native village is about to be surrendered to the Germans. No one trusts him; but during the occupation he becomes the secret executioner of many German soldiers. When he is finally captured and his true identity is revealed, he goes to his death asking no one’s praise for his patriotic actions.]

Leonov, Leonid. The orchards of Polovchansk: a play in four acts.
LOCATION: Widener: Harvard Depository Slav 4185.120
[Fairly interesting drama which is set in the pre-World War II years and which endeavors to evoke a certain patriotic feeling, not only by its portrayal of life in the native village, but also by its spy-thriller trappings. Leonov’s own apparent lack of full commitment results in weak characterization, poor motivation, etc. The play seems to sustain the general judgement that Leonov is a much better novelist than he is a dramatist.]

[A semi-utopian novel which, in spite of Leonov’s very obvious and undoubtedly sincere attempts to create deliberately a well-rounded “human” Soviet hero, failed to be fully acceptable to the critical hierarchy. The firmly established old Bolshevik, Kurilov, who has given his whole life to the cause and who is now dedicated to the building of a new railroad (to the sea), is shown in his last days afflicted by a fatal cancer. In his personal life, in association with two young women, he now seeks some of the romantic love he has missed; and in his intellectual life, he envisions in several dreams (together with his friend Leonov) Ocean, which is the ideal Communist world of the future. Leonov, however, cannot resist his psychological probings; nor can he make everyone completely good or completely bad according to the official policy.]

Leonov, Leonid. The Russian forest: a novel. Moscow: Progress Publishers,

[Leonov’s tale of the professor whose rival commits calumny in order to destroy the professor’s reputation as well as his plans for achieving the proper use of the great forests of Russia for the national good. A complicated tale of intrigue, complemented by some excellent descriptive passages, with Leonov’s usual psychological technique, probes sympathetically into the hearts of his “confused” characters who can appreciate the “old world” while still struggling to comprehend and serve the “new.”]

Leonov, Leonid. Sot. London, New York: Putnam, 1931.

LOCATION: Widener: Slav 4557.66.710
[A tale which tells of the building of a paper factory in spite of obstacles of laziness, ignorance, attempted sabotage, and even uncertain belief in the future of socialism. Seems to evidence Leonov’s first real try at commitment to the Soviet way, for he is here more concerned with the movement rather than with the characters. It is one of the best of the many Five-Year-Plan novels: not great; but it does rise above the usual propagandistic mediocrity. In the foreword, both the book and the author are highly praised by Gorky.]

[Very good translation of the work Western critics hold to be Leonov’s masterpiece. The Civil War fighter, Mitka, becomes a leader of a gang of thieves, partly because he cannot adapt to peaceful activity and partly because he feels that the real revolution is being betrayed by the new bureaucracy. Leonov’s main concern is the Dostoevskian exploitation of character which manages to set his book beyond the reach of political or ideological control. The psychological ambivalence of his chief characters is, however, somewhat counterbalanced by his complicated plot structure and his occasional tendency toward verbosity.]

[Three fat men is Olesha’s supposed fairy tale for children which once more sympathetically portrays those who cannot submit without a struggle to the new system. Three despots kidnap two orphans and then separate the brother and sister. They order the boy’s heart to be replaced with a mechanical one so that he may become their worthy successor. The oppressed people eventually overthrow their evil rulers and restore justice to the land. The novel was first turned into a play and then into a highly successful ballet.]

[Interesting short novel which very cleverly portrays in sympathetic terms the frustrations of the arch-individualist Kavalerov and his romantic mentor, the thwarted inventor Ivan Babichev in their “envious” attempt to rebel against the Soviet system with its new and admirable “machine men.” Stylistic inventiveness, Dostoevskian overtones, subtle characterizations, and dream sequences make the work both intriguing and difficult.]
