About the fund

The gift of Louis J. Appell, Jr. A.B. 1947 to establish an early American fund in Houghton Library to strengthen holdings of early Harvard history; the writings or prominent early Harvard writers (e.g. Cotton Mather), pre-1820 imprints, works on social history of the early American colonies and the early Republic, abolistionist and anti-slavery material (emphasis on New England), civil war material related to New England, and material relating to the life and career of Abraham Lincoln. The resources will include books, pamphlets, manuscripts (diaries and letters), broadsides, ephemera and prints.
