About the fund

The bequest of Mary Hyde, Viscountess Eccles, for an endowment to be used to maintain and preserve all material in the collection known formally as The Donald and Mary Hyde Collection of Dr. Samuel Johnson and informally as The Hyde Collection. For the sake of continuing research into the life and works of Dr. Johnson and his circle, Harvard shall agree to add not only rare books and manuscripts to the collection, but also important current contributions to Johnsonian scholarship. Modern research books may be disposed of if this is deemed advisable; manuscripts and rare printed books, however, may not be deaccessioned. A curator for the Collection shall be appointed and known as The Hyde Curator.
