NLP Workshop

On April 6th CoDA hosted its latest event centered around Natural Language Processing (NLP). During the event, Victoria Prince and Christine Rivera, data scientists at Research Computing Services (RCS) at DRFD, provided an overview of NLP techniques and tools. With the latest buzz around AI and chat bots such as ChatGPT, Bard and Bing AI, the event was timely and well attended.

Victoria dove deep into the common applications of NLP, breaking down how text classification works and how it can be broken down to acquire, process, and extract the data needed for classification. Christine then spoke about the first type of classification: topic modeling. She outlined the core concepts of topic modeling, the various types, and the techniques she’s applied to her own experience in working with several faculty members on their research. Victoria took over and finished with some facts on the second type of classification: sentiment analysis. She explained the steps and methods one should consider when working with sentiment analysis and mentioned some specific approaches used by her team.
