
Dr. Newton E. Kendig is a national leader in correctional health care with over 25 years of experience managing incarcerated patients in U.S. state and federal prisons. He served as Medical Director of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services from 1991 through 1996. He later became a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) assigned to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) where he served as Chief of Infectious Diseases, Medical Director, and ultimately Assistant Director in charge of the Health Services Division from 2006 to 2015. Dr. Kendig is currently a Governance Board member of the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. In 2017, Dr. Kendig was appointed Clinical Professor of Medicine at GW to spearhead criminal justice health programs for the university. His initiatives include integration of criminal justice health care into the GW medical school curriculum, advancing national correctional health care policies through collective stakeholder engagement, and providing expert technical assistance to health care providers and administrators in U.S. jails and prison.
