Harvard Summer Program in Kenya: Week Six

In the final week of the program, students shifted their attention to human evolution. With the instruction of Dr. Dan Lieberman, the course retraced the story of early humans and their hominid ancestors. These topics were further illuminated by course TAs Emmanuel Aoron and Medina Lubisia, both of whom conduct research that is related to the topic of human evolution. The group also enjoyed a bisit to the nearby site of Locheragan, where Emmanuel had previously worked.

Harvard Summer Program in Kenya: Week Five

The fifth week of the Harvard Summer Program in Kenya came with a shift of focus to paleontology, which was taught by Dr. Indrė Žliobaitė and Dr. Daniel Green. Students participated in a lab activity in which they differentiated between different classes of vertebrates, hunted for fossils in South Turkwel, and learned the basics of coding via two machine learning assignments, the second of which culminated in group presentations at the end of the week.

Harvard Summer Program in Kenya: Week Four

Students shifted their attention to geology in Week Four, which included a three-day trip to the Late Miocene site of Lothagam, about one hour from TBI by truck. Camping at the site was an exciting and educational experience, and in addition to learning a lot about the landscape of the area and the features that constitute it, students also had opportunities to learn and paleontology and archaeology.

Harvard Summer Program in Kenya: Week Three

Week three brought a change of scenery as the group transitioned from the Mpala Research Center in Laikipia County to the Turkana Basin Institute’s Turkwel Facility, located in northwest Kenya on the Turkana river. The students would be stationed there for the remainder of the program, which had in store for them teachings about geology, paleontology, and archaeology.

Harvard Summer Program in Kenya: Week Two

The program’s second week was devoted to the study of infectious diseases. Lectures were given by Dr. Jonathan Epstein, an infectious disease specialist, and Dr. Edward Kariuki, an expert in Kenyan wildlife ecology. Students had the opportunity to see how human-animal interactions played out at the nearby villages of Lekiji and Ilmotiok.

Harvard Summer Program in Kenya: Week One

The six-week Harvard Summer Program in Kenya began on June 1, 2024 in the capital city of Nairobi. Week one featured talks by The Turkana Basin Institute’s Dr. Dino Martins, who hosted the group at his home and later joined them at the Mpala Research Center, where he played a critical role in the course’s focus on ecology.
