Carleton Stevens Coon

Carleton Stevens Coon (1904–1981) was a Harvard-trained anthropologist who went on to a long academic career and eventually wound up at the University of Pennsylvania. In the 1930s and early 1940s, he was closely involved with the American School of Prehistoric Research (ASPR), serving as one of its principal field archaeologists in North Africa. For example, Coon led and co-directed ASPR excavations at Mugharet el ‘Aliya (The High Cave) where, working with Ralph Nahon and Hooker Doolittle, he helped establish the cave’s stratigraphic sequence. His excavations also uncovered stone tools, faunal remains, and fragmentary hominin fossils.
