Alfred Tozzer

Alfred Marston Tozzer (1877–1954) was a pioneering American anthropologist and archaeologist, and he was listed as a member of the ASPR during its earliest years. A Harvard graduate, he taught there for most of his career and became the first Harvard professor of anthropology. Tozzer conducted extensive fieldwork in Mexico and Central America, producing foundational studies of Maya language, religion, and society. At Harvard, Tozzer mentored anthropologists and was instrumental in developing the Peabody Museum’s collections, cementing the university’s leadership in American archaeology.
