Hugh O’Neill Hencken

Hugh Hencken was the editor of the ASPR bulletin series between the years of 1948 and 1971, and he also served as the Director of the School following Mr. MacCurdy’s passing. He was born in New York City in 1902, and in 1930 he received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University, after earning an A.B. and a B.A. from Princeton University. In 1930 he began working at Harvard University at a curator of European Archaeology, and it was likely at this time that he started establishing the connections that would lead him to his 33-year role as the Director of the ASPR. Throughout his career, in addition to lecturing at Harvard University, he taught at London University, Oxford University, and Edinburgh University. His research was diverse and varied but a central theme was the Iron Age in Europe and North Africa. Dr. Hencken wrote about his research in ASPR bulletin #23, which he authored.
