Footprints: 2 Million Years of Running in Kenya

On January 5th 2024, the ASPR sponsored a workshop in Eldoret, Kenya titled Footprints: 2 Million Years of Running in Kenya. The day-long event was held at the Eka Hotel and included talks by Dr. Dan Lieberman, Dr. Frederick Manthi, and Jonathan Bii, the governor of the district to which Eldoret belongs. There were also a number of notable Kenyan runners in attendance, including Kipchoge Keino, who in 1968 became the first Kenyan to win gold in the Olympics, Daniel Komen, who has held the record for the 3,000 meter since winning it in 1996, and Tekla Chemabwai Sang, one of the first female Kenyan athletes to participate in the olympics. Both younger and older elite runners attended, and the event was educational for Kenyan runners who wanted to learn about the history of their sport in their country.
