Leu Balate

Leu Balate participated in Gorongosa Interdisciplinary Training in Human Evolution. Based in Mozambique, this field school combines the study of Miocene fossil sites and Pleistocene caves with primatology focused on the behavioral adaptations of baboons and vervet monkeys. Leu Balate is seeking an undergraduate degree in Geological Science at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Mozambique. He has theoretical and practical training in Geological Sciences, and his main interest is to use his geological training to understand fossils and their context. He is becoming one of the few Mozambicans with geological training focused on research related to our evolutionary past. This field season will provide Leu Balate and the other students with unique opportunities to learn about the interplay of geology and evolution at the southern end of the East African Rift Valley.
